What is PCI DSS and why was it created?

PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) is a set of security standards designed to protect credit card information during processing, storage, and transmission. It was created by major payment card brands (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, and JCB) to help organizations protect sensitive cardholder data and prevent credit card-related fraud.

Certification Levels

For Merchants

PCI DSS compliance is divided into four tiers, based on annual transaction volume:

Level 4

Less than 20 thousand transactions (physical and online) per year.

Level 3

Between 20 thousand and 1 million transactions (physical and online) per year.

Level 2

Between 1 and 6 million transactions (physical and online) per year.

Level 1

More than 6 million transactions (physical and online) per year.

For Payment Service Providers (PSPs)

There are two levels of PCI DSS compliance certifications, based on annual transaction volume.

Level 2

Less than 300 thousand transactions per year.

Level 1

More than 300 thousand transactions per year
